Written by: Samantha McCarthy, MS, RD/LDN
The final nutrition trend in US News recent article on the top 5 trends for 2017 is algae. I’ll be honest, this one took me by surprise as well! Algae is more well-known as the stuff that builds up around water on rocks, boats, and other standing fixtures than for its nutritional properties. But, according to US News, we will be seeing a lot more algae added into our foods. Let’s take a look at this up and coming trend.
You may not know it, but algae is already apart of many of your favorite foods. It is used to add color, flavor, protein, nutrients, and to thicken many of your favorite snack foods, bars, and pastas. It is a versatile product and is produced in the billions each year. You can also find it sold as a supplement in health food stores. It is popular in many asian cultures and is making its way to the Western world. The most popular algaes go by the name Spirulina and Chlorella. So what’s all the fuss about?
The Benefits
It happens that algae is high in many nutrients. First off, it is high in healthy fats, like polyunsaturated fatty acids. It is also high in protein making it a good substitute for vegans. Algae is rich in carotenoids like beta-carotene. It is high in antioxidants and many vitamins like vitamin A, C, E, and your B-vitamins. All of these make algae a very nutrient rich food that is versatile as well.
The Cons
Carrageenan is a popular algae used in foods. It is added to deli meats to keep them together when slicing, protein powders to help them emulsify, and dairy products to keep them from separating. Carrageenan has been reported to cause significant health issues ranging from digestive issues to migraines. Beware of this algae as it may not be the best for you!
The Verdict
Algaes in food are still relatively new and while they may have many nutritional benefits we are not sure if they have other health effects on our body. We have seen carrageen go from a very popular additive to a one that is avoided by the public. Be careful of how much you consume from any of the algae’s.
